Since Bill Gates is replaced with Steve Ballmer (Screaming Monkey Boy). Microsoft announced that even after hiring 100s and 100s of smart people they are freaking unable to “Get Os Name Right“. It started with “Windows 3.1″ from which they adopted a naming system based on the year of release, which it continued until Windows 98.

Windows Me (perhaps the worst operating system I’ve ever used), sacrificed the scheme for a chance to be clever (it stood for “me” and the millennium at the same time!) Next up we hit Windows XP, which has served most of us reasonably well since 2001. It sounds sort of cool, it’s catchy, and we have no idea what it means.

Now the fun part we’ll be running Internet Explorer 8 (or 9) and Mediaplayer 11 (or 12) on Windows 7… excitement is just Killing me ;) !

i wish they would of stuck with their names from the start. like, you know… DOS 1.0 all the way to 6.22, then for Windows, 1.0 to 4.01 (NT). Then we started with the years, Windows 95, 98, 2000….. that stopped, now more recently, XP and Vista. I hope they will go to Windows 7, as their final product name, and go from then… (7.0, 7.1, 7.5, 9, 20)

    consistency and uniformity
