Why Do Indians Lack In-Your-Face-Aggression?

by Chirag Chamoli

As an Indian, I have always been taught to be “nice’ even if it is, the fault of others. Give the other cheek so to speak. Does this lack or aggression and humility cause of the slow and sluggish pace at which India is moving. We very seldom meet a person who is aggressive and then we bitch and moan about them in India. Our business, sports, politics etc they all lack it.

For instance, how can a politician make a businessperson of Ratan Tata stature leave the place he wants to do the business?

How can handful goons decide what is moral and what is unacceptable to Indians?

How can a “woman” minister Sheila Dixit, decide what the right time to return home from work for woman?

Why can’t we answer straight questions like these?

There are many questions, with virtually no solution in sight, so do you think if we are more aggressive in pursuing the quest we would be better off.

Oh, we’re aggressive all right – it’s just that we’re aggressive for all the wrong reasons. And, as I have pointed out in my post on mob violence, we are very smart in our aggression; we are only aggressive in situations where the possibility of harm to us is minimal.

    Cheers,

cx: We are “Chance pe Dance” kind of risk takers. Agree with you on this.

I think what we lack as a nation is introspection. We must look back and think after every action, how this might affect us as an individual and as a nation – the big picture, I mean. We must believe in the power of reason not emotion, because reason will always win over emotion in the long run. We need not be overtly aggressive, but if we are collectively aggressive, firm and optimistic atleast for the cause of the greater (nation’s) good, then we are all set. I think what we need is to take a stand.

cx: summing the above : IF YOU DON’T STAND UP FOR SOMETHING, YOU’LL FALL FOR EVERYTHING

    Hi Chirag,
Firstly thanks for coming up with great captions for that picture on my blog!!
On your blog post :: If thats a handicap, one can also see it as an asset for us Indians.
Its great that we aren’t that aggressive!
Had we been that aggressive in doling out housing mortgages in our country like US, Europe and all the “aggressive” countries, we would have been sulking like them too and not to forget, bailing out the ‘aggressive’ banks……
I’d agree with ‘quirky indian’ to some extent.

cx: LOL, Chirag, You have really good blog http://myfinancetimes.com I get some very good updates from there.
Alternate view: Had we been that aggressive we would have been stronger players in the world economy. I will give you a lame eg: We have some Grade 1: Apple which are exported to EU. Now why can’t that be an aggressive industry and make sure we are exporting atleast 90% of worlds Grade A apples. We have the workforce and we have land.

well yes,we need to be aggressive in questioning and we should find out answers :)

    1. It might all have been a bigger conspiracy. Tatas now have 1000 acres on which they no longer are obliged to have a factory.

cx: I think the objective was to get a factory up there. Political factors shouldn’t be deciding factors for where a person is allowed to setup a shop.

    2. Dixit was right in saying that going home alone at 3 AM without escort was unwise. Was the TV Company not obliged to send an escort or have her driven home? Why does not anyone talk of the Company’s criminal lapse? Would you let your 25 year old daughter [dare to] come away at 3 AM the way the poor girl did?

cx: going home alone at 3 AM without escort was unwise I am sorry and troubled that you said this, WHY ARE WE FREE, so that women should still be in shackles and what about government’s criminal lapse aren’t they suppose to provide a safe environment?

  6. 2008 October 14

agreed ..Indians are a polite by nature …
tata’s mention was very imp here ..

but i guess he knows he cant do anything when political games were being played with his factory …:P sometimes its wise to be less aggressive. ..

but i think in the current cricket team there are some players who are as aggressive as others ..no need to mention their name

cx: I agree sometimes its wise to be less aggressive, but come to think of it if a Businesman of such stature couldn’t over turn Govt Bull*** what about us, if we face such a problem. A country should be based on reason and logic, not on someones personal whimsy

Haven’t yet read this post, wanted to tell you I like the caption on the header…leaders are extinct here:(

cx: I know very troubling, Most of the best brains are in Private Jobs. And good ones in Public jobs are too few to make a dent.

Read the post. Maybe it is selfishness and apathy, we don’t react until something concerns us directly?
And then we are becoming so intolerant, we are so easy to provoke, ready to hate for imagined slights, often committed centuries ago, by ancestors of the people we hate, by people unknown to the ones we hate!
And then we are aggressive only when we are in a mob.
Sheila Dixit is a Minister first, and an irresponsible one at that. She does not realise what she says will be quoted to many rape victims, who will be blamed for stepping out of their homes at unsafe hours! Her words must sound so soothing to potential murderers.

cx: IHM You have hit the nail on the head.
Maybe it is selfishness and apathy, we don’t react until something concerns us directly!

  9. 2008 October 14

On one hand we are apathetic and on the other – aggressive! Strange combo.

Cx: Yes Nita, I think we are strangely functional people, yet.

I may be under qualified to comment on this, but I would like to argue that this ‘passivity’ is, in fact, progression. A society in which there are no aggressive member’s would engender teamwork and efficiency. It is the aggressive people, in fact, who disrupt this.

cx : Lucien you are not at all under qualified to comment on this, actually I like when you give an honest view on any topic. In my view we need to reach where we are collaborating and working together then later we should be think about managing the disruption. We are two steps behind the curve :(

  11. 2008 October 15

I always felt we are united when it comes to our religion and for all the other issues, our attitude is more kinda of ‘chalta hai’!
I guess we indians are more adaptable and can adjust to everything. But there is limit to this, lets c when we will become aggresive.

cx: Our ‘chalta hai’! attitude is the problem here. I hope sooner :) .

Hey, what is the story of your header pic. Can you let me know what actually is happening? Curious to know!

    and

if u stand up 4 somethin.may be next time u wont b able to stand

  16. 2008 October 18

We are aggressive !! for all the wrong reasons as quirky indian put it ! I agree with him.

I wouldn’t say we are a polite lot. How many times do you see people opening doors for women? Stand in a queue patiently?
Coming back to the topic, I think much of these violence etc is due to improper law enforcing as the re are politicians sitting on top of the law enforcers not letting them do their work even if they want to.
